About Us One of every three homeless males in the United States is a veteran, and each night as many as 200,000 men and women veterans go to sleep with no place to call home, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. But similar to the general population of homeless adult males, about 45% of homeless veterans suffer from mental illness and (with considerable overlap) slightly more than 70% suffer from alcohol or other drug abuse problems. Roughly 56% are African American or Hispanic (Dept of VA, 2007). | Company history Odessa Maxwell is a 1994 United States Military Academy graduate, who served 12 years in the U.S. Army. After becoming a veteran, she realized that many of the veterans were dealing with post traumatic stress disorder. This illness was usually the starting factor of many other issues and problems. These compounding issues usually led to transient living conditions. Odessa Maxwell is a poet, author, and spokenword artist who documents social issues through her written words. It is her hope that she can effect change one person at a time by at least keeping them warm on the cold city streets as they are turned away from full shelters or from their fear of seeking shelter. | |
